Remembering D-Day and the Battle of Normandy 80 Years On

volunteers

The D-Day landings in Normandy on 6th June 1944 was the largest seaborne invasion in history. Along with the associated airborne operations, this historic invasion of Nazi-occupied France changed the course of the second world war in the Allies’ favour which led to victory over the Nazis a year later.

The International 80th Anniversary D-Day Beacon overlooking Gold Beach will be lit in Normandy at 8:15pm (BST), followed by other beacons at the other Normandy invasion beaches at 8:30pm with the principal UK based beacon at Portsmouth at 9:15pm. Communities in the UK are asked to pay tribute to those who took part 80 years ago . In Seaton the Royal British Legion will be raising the D-Day Flag at 9:00am and lighting the Beacon at 9:15pm. SAVE food hub will be shining a light at its premises in Queen Street.

It’s worth remembering that food was rationed from January 1940 and rationing did not end until the 1950s. Unimaginable now perhaps? Could we get by with strictly rationed butter, bacon, sugar, meat, tea, jam, biscuits, breakfast cereals, cheese eggs, lard, milk, canned fruit, and dried fruit. Our parents/grandparents/great grandparents did!
