How Much Food Have We SAVEd From Going to Waste?

Here at SAVE we get our surplus food from Fareshare South West, Exeter Food Action, local supermarkets, businesses , farms and people who are green fingered enough to have surplus produce from their gardens and allotments. This final source of good quality fresh fruit and vegetables is one we will soon be enjoying!

Our volunteers weigh every bit of food and that is recorded so we can see how much we are preventing going to waste. The figures are impressive.

Seaton Community Larder on its own saved an enormous weight of surplus food in the last 12 months.
May 2023 - 1,667kg
Last 3 months - 4,947kg
Last 6 months 10,754kg
Last 12 months 17,336kg

And SAVE as a whole saved the following amazing amounts -
May 2023 - 3,005kg
Last 3 months 8,661kg
Last 6 months 19,115kg
Last 12 months 32,552kg

Together with the efforts being made in other communities across the country this is a splendid effort and a wonderful contribution towards reducing food waste and protecting the environment.

Producing food requires significant resources including land, energy and water. According to a recent article by WRAP (https://wrap.org.uk/taking-action/food-drink/actions/action-on-food-waste) Globally, 25–30% of total food produced is lost or wasted, and food waste is estimated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to contribute 8-10% of total man-made greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. If food waste were a country, it would be the world’s third largest emitter after China and the USA.

If you have surplus food and would like it SAVEd from going to waste please get in contact either via email at savefoodhub@gmail.com or via our website savefoodhub.org.uk/contact
